Seminars
Personal Leadership seminars are designed for those who wish to examine the directions and commitments they are making in their own lives as they live and work in environments of unfamiliarity and difference—at home, in the workplace, in the community.
Environments of unfamiliarity and difference may arise when we are in personal and/or professional transition, ready to consider our future direction. This sense of “readiness” may present itself as a vague sense that “something is around the corner” or in the form of clearly defined questions about emerging and change-filled opportunities. The practices of Personal Leadership bring clarity in discerning the next steps and direction for taking them.
Environments of unfamiliarity and difference are also present as we work and live between cultures, both internationally and domestically. Those of us who live this way or who do such work tend to be very well intentioned. We want to withhold judgment, want to tolerate ambiguity, want to describe rather than evaluate, want not to misattribute meaning. And we want to help our families and our clients learn to live and work this way as well. All of this is much more easily discussed in theory, however, than actually practiced. The framework of Personal Leadership offers very specific strategies for learning to “walk our talk” and for learning to thrive in a multicultural world.
Personal Leadership seminars, then, are intended for:
- practitioners such as trainers, facilitators, teachers, and coaches
- organizational development consultants,
- higher education faculty and staff
- health-care professionals,
- international human resource professionals,
- international development/humanitarian relief workers,
- local community activists,
- immigrant and refugee service providers,
- expatriate and repatriate executives,
- expatriate and repatriate spouses,
- diplomats, mediators, and negotiators,
- leaders who wish to leverage the creative potential of their diverse constituencies
- anyone interested in examining the directions and commitments they are making as they live and work across cultures.
Personal Leadership seminars serve those who are themselves interculturally active, as well as those whose responsibilities include guiding others towards maximal effectiveness in a multicultural context.
Currently, all seminars are conducted in English although several of the Personal Leadership facilitators are bi- or multi-lingual.
Typical seminar objectives include
- becoming familiar with the two principles and six practices that comprise the Personal Leadership framework,
- contextualizing their theoretical foundations in intercultural communication, organizational leadership, and whole-person self-development, and
- rigorously applying them to participants’ specific situations through the powerful process technology of ‘The Critical Moment Dialoguesm.’
In sum, Personal Leadership seminars afford participants the opportunity for deeply personal time in the context of an inspiring and energizing community. Seminars focus on the breadth of individual interests and engage the depths of collective creativity. Each day includes content-focused discussions and integrative conversations as well as opportunities for quiet reflection. Whatever the personal and/or professional reasons of those participating, Personal Leadership seminars become experiences of insight, renewal and re-inspiration.
Personal Leadership seminars are currently offered through the Summer Institute for Intercultural Communication and through a roster of public seminars offered in locations around the world.
