Introduction Seminar Overview Seminar Leaders Becoming a PLSeminars-Recognized Facilitator Logistics (times, fees, venue, meals, lodging) Travel Considerations Location Registration   Introduction Why: Personal Leadership (PL) is a simple method and can appear deceptively easy to facilitate. However, just as practitioners quickly discover the profound nuances of the principles and practices, so too do facilitators quickly discover the depth and complexity of facilitating PL learning events. Training of Facilitator (ToF) seminars provide a learning community for examining the dynamics of facilitating PL in both diverse contexts and with diverse content. For example:
  • diverse contexts, such as higher education, public and non-governmental organizations, social service agencies, and business
  • diverse content, such as studying abroad, executive and leadership development, teambuilding, conflict management, and equity and inclusion
Participating in a ToF seminar is a pre-requisite for those who may then choose to become members of the PLSeminars Facilitator Community of Practice. What: A blended learning Training of Facilitators seminar consisting of a five-day face-to-face session, two two-hour virtual plenary sessions, and partner and individual assignments. When: Pre-work: will be sent to registered participants by Monday, February 6, 2017 Face-to-Face Session: Monday March 6th (6pm) to Saturday March 11th (8pm), 2017 Virtual Plenary Sessions: Wednesday March 22nd and Wednesday April 26th (specific times to be determined, once we know participants’ time zones) Individual Assignments and Partner Sessions: To be determined by participants Where: Face-to-Face Session: The Whidbey Institute, Whidbey Island, WA, USA Virtual Plenary Sessions: Online, using Adobe Connect Pro Meeting (no software is required, only a strong broadband connection) Individual Assignments and Partner Sessions: To be determined by participants Return to top   Seminar Overview The Learning Objectives: As a participant in this Training-of-Facilitators (ToF) seminar, you will increase your ability to do the following:
  • Communicate to your participants how a Personal Leadership practice can help them translate their knowledge and commitment into embodied competence
  • Adapt the method, including the terminology, to best suit your professional context
  • Sequence the method into your existing content and deepen content learning
  • Design activities illustrating the two principles and six practices that are appropriate to your specific clients or industry
  • Place the Personal Leadership method within its theoretical contexts, and assess when and how to introduce this theory to your participants
  • Explain Personal Leadership’s guiding tenets and answer frequently asked questions
  • Use personal stories/examples to illustrate the principles and practices of Personal Leadership and the Critical Moment Dialogue
  • Assess yourself using the ToF Developmental Benchmarks and create a personalized plan for on-going development as a facilitator of Personal Leadership
Together we will augment and amend these goals in response to the learning agendas you and the other participants bring to the seminar. The final design of this program will be tailored to the experience level and developmental need of those who register. Who Should Attend: This seminar is designed for experienced designers and facilitators, although you may be new to Personal Leadership itself. It is intended for those who currently facilitate learning events which incorporate the Personal Leadership methodology, or who intend to do so in the near future, and who want to maximize the effectiveness of their work. The seminar is intended for:
  • first-time ToF seminar participants
  • past ToF seminar participants who are continuing their skill development
  • participants in and graduates of the PLSeminars Facilitator Program
Pre-requisites: The pre-requisites for participation are either
  1. a)   completion of a Personal Leadership Foundations seminar or its equivalent
  2. b)   completion of a self-study program of the Personal Leadership method
Please contact us with any questions at info@plseminars.com. Seminar Design The seminar consists of three strands:
  1. The core content components of Personal Leadership
  2. Design considerations, addressing such issues as briefing and debriefing, sequencing, audience variables, short- and long-form options, etc
  3. Your own specific design, culminating in your delivery of that design
Altogether, the combined ToF seminar will:
  • bring your attention specifically to the facilitation process of PL, refining your facilitation practice, focusing on capacity and knowledge development, and addressing individualized applications of Personal Leadership,
  • involve independent design work, small group collaboration, and delivery experimentation,
  • deepen your own personal PL practice and
  • provide an opportunity for small group coaching with the seminar leaders.
Please note: As part of the ToF seminar, participants will design, develop, and deliver a PL learning event for clients, colleagues, family members and/or friends – it doesn’t matter for whom, the point is to start experiencing the process of facilitating PL. The ToF schedule is designed so that participants will facilitate for their chosen audience between the two virtual plenary sessions that follow the face-to-face component. For more information, please contact PLSeminars at info@plseminars.com Return to top   Seminar Leaders The seminar will be designed and facilitated by Barbara F. Schaetti, Ph.D., and Gordon Watanabe, Ed.D. We hope you will join us for a unique, powerful, and joyous experience. PLSeminars and the Intercultural Communication Institute are affiliated as Program Partners. Return to top    Becoming a PLSeminars-Recognized Facilitator Once you have completed a Training of Facilitators seminar, you have the option of enrolling in the Facilitator Program for further focused development. The Personal Leadership (PL) Facilitator Program is a skill development and recognition program for professionals who use the method of Personal Leadership in their work with clients, colleagues, students, organizations, and others. It is managed and governed by Senior Facilitators, graduates of the Program who have been recognized by their peers as achieving a high standard of excellence as they consult, train, teach, and/or coach using Personal Leadership. The Facilitator Program enrolls one cohort per year, in May. Participants from prior ToF seminars are eligible, as well as those just completing the current ToF seminar. Return to top   Logistics Dates/Times: The Training of Facilitators (ToF) seminar begins Monday February 6, 2017 with an email to participants suggesting preparatory reading and reflection. Our communal meals will be prepared by Chef Christyn of the Whidbey Institute. All ingredients will be organic and locally sourced when possible. For those meals not included in your registration, participants typically go together off campus. If you stay on site, you will have access to complete kitchen facilities. Lodging: The Whidbey Institute has reserved for us its historic (and fully renovated) Farmhouse, the woodland house known as Granny’s, and three personal cabins. All are nestled in the Heartland of the 100 acre Chinook Forest, within easy access of our meeting room in Thomas Berry Hall. Watch this short video for an introduction to the facilities. The Farmhouse has a fully equipped kitchen and comfortable common space; it provides seven bedrooms and two full bathrooms (one with shower, one with tub) upstairs, plus a restroom downstairs. A limited number of single occupancy rooms are available.  We will facilitate roommate matching as requested. Granny’s is located a short forest walk from our meeting room in Thomas Berry Hall. All rooms are equipped with single beds and are designed for double (or triple) occupancy, with shared toilet and bathroom facilities. Granny’s has a fully equipped kitchen and comfortable common space with a wood-burning stove. The rustic cabins offer a secluded and tranquil space for your time at the Institute. Each cabin has its unique character and charm; two of the three cabins are single occupancy. The cabins have no indoor plumbing and no cell, internet or phone service, but are close to a common shower house/restrooms. If you would like to stay on campus, please specify your lodging preferences when you register [link to registration portal]. Housing is allocated on a first-come first-served basis. It assumes your arrival Monday March 6th, and your departure Sunday March 12th. You may book extra nights before or after the seminar, if available, for an additional cost.
  • Single occupancy in the Farmhouse is $550 (including tax)
  • Shared occupancy in the Farmhouse and Granny’s, and single accommodation in the cabins, is $500 (tax included)
  • Shared occupancy in the cabins is $450 (tax included)
South Whidbey is a popular tourist destination, so there are also many B&Bs and hotels from which you can choose. VRBO (Vacation Rentals by Owner) and Airbnb are both popular services on Whidbey. Please note that our venue is on the south end of Whidbey Island; the nearest towns are Clinton and Langley, with Freeland also within relatively easy range.  Return to top Travel Considerations The Whidbey Institute is on Whidbey Island, about 90 minutes north of the Seattle Tacoma International Airport (depending on traffic and ferry-line wait times). The two best ways to get to Whidbey Island from the airport are by 1) airport shuttle or 2) rental car.  See below for more information about these two options. Please note that while those of you staying off campus will definitely need a car, those of you staying on campus will probably want to have access to one too. At the least, you’ll need a car to get off campus for dinner. When you register, you will be asked whether you would like to coordinate with other participants to share the costs of a rental car or to give others a ride in your personal vehicle. Getting to Whidbey by Airport Shuttle: Seattle offers an international airport  with an excellent shuttle service to Whidbey Island. One advantage of using the shuttle is that the shuttle has guaranteed loading for the next ferry; even during peak hours and during the peak season (which March is not), you are guaranteed loading. To use the shuttle, you must book in advance and designate a drop-off location. If you are staying on-site at the Whidbey Institute, we recommend the “Langley/Clinton” stop. You will need to make advance arrangements with the local taxi service to pick you up from the shuttle and take you to the Whidbey Institute. Getting to Whidbey by Rental Car: All the national rental car companies are represented at the Seattle Tacoma International Airport, and the drive from the airport to Whidbey Island is an easy one. You will need to take a ferry from the Mukilteo terminal on the mainland to the Clinton terminal on Whidbey Island. As you will see from the schedule, ferries leave every 30 minutes during most of the day and the crossing takes about 15 minutes. The Whidbey Institute has plenty of parking, although most of it is a short walk from our meeting room at Thomas Berry Hall.  If you are mobility-impaired and will need to park at Thomas Berry Hall itself, please specify when you register. Directions: The Whidbey Institute offers additional travel information, including directions for those coming by car. Return to top    Location The Wikipedia account of  Whidbey Island does its best, but it can’t evoke the grandeur of the cedars, pines, and firs; the intimacy of woodland trails; the expansiveness of water and sky with distant mountain ranges; the awe of a hummingbird hovering close or an eagle soaring high on the winds overhead. Whidbey Island is a special place, and we will be in one of its heart centers when we gather at the Whidbey Institute.  The broader community is active with artists, musicians, and writers; with spiritual and movement practitioners; with global and local change agents; with environmental stewards and farmers both young and old; with second- and third-generation family businesses; with wineries and wine tasting rooms…  If you can give yourself the time to come early or stay late, you will find plenty to delight you.  Return to top   Registration Registration is available now through Eventbrite.
